How to Look Good Naked… In Your Forties

I recently had a friend say “I want to look good naked.  How do you do that?”  Well, the answer is quite simple, but taking action may be a little more difficult if you don’t have the motivation to get up, get out and do it.  It’s not a matter of just losing weight.  You know the saying losing weight will help you look better in clothes?  It’s true.  Well, sort of.  Depending on the shape of your body, you will probably look better in your clothes than you did before you lost weight, but you still won’t look great.  To look good naked you must workout consistently (and I’m not just talking cardio – you need a balanced program that will include some weight training as well), and maintain a clean diet as well.

What does working out do to change your body and make you look better (naked)?  Well, for starters, it tones your muscles, gives you curves.  Yes, you read that right –  working out gives you curves.  The right curves in the right places.  No booty… at all?  You CAN change that by working out.  Build some muscle in that booty, do your squats… I can just about guarantee you will start to see a nice little booty sprouting up there if you stick to the plan.  Want an hourglass figure but you haven’t got a waist? Workout!  Oblique crunches, for one, will help you whittle your waist. But you really need to work your whole body on a regular basis to look (not just good) but divine, naked.  I workout 5 to 6 days a week sometimes a half hour sometimes an hour or more each day.  But a half hour of a great workout program 4 to 5 days a week should do the trick.

Here’s the hard part… You have to be mindful of what you eat and drink.  You have to cut the crap!  Stay away from the sugar, the bread, the alcohol. I think most women would like to think that a glass or two of wine doesn’t count. But it does!  Big time.  You can count on red wine having at least 25 calories per ounce, making a five ounce serving come in at about 125 calories.  And from what I’ve seen, most women usually pour generous servings of about 8 ounces which would mean they are drinking 200 calories per glass (and be mindful of the sugar and carbs involved too).  If you’re going to have wine, you probably want to switch it out for one of your daily snacks.  Counting calories isn’t fun, but when it comes to wine (or any alcoholic beverage, really), you have to do the math.  Do you know how to calculate your daily caloric intake to maintain your current weight or lose weight, how about how many calories you should consume if you are exercising and trying to lose weight?  (I can help you with this, you just have to ask.)  This is information you really should familiarize yourself with if you want to look good naked.

You also have to learn proper portion sizes.  Most people have no idea.  Which is why one of the health and fitness programs I recommend works so well.  You actually get a meal plan with containers to measure out your portions for everything you eat, from your protein to your carbs to your sauces and (you got it) even wine and chocolate (but you have to switch it out for something else you were going to have that day)!  Using this program over time and getting a visual for what portion sizes should look like – you should eventually get to a point where you are able to measure your portions from memory.  (Not to mention that your stomach will actually get smaller so you won’t be able to eat as much food without getting uncomfortable – we all know that uncomfortable feeling, the one we usually get during the holiday season when we overstuff ourselves with all of that delicious, saucy, comfort food).

Make sure you are eating clean whole foods instead of processed empty calories and fast food.  Use your food to fuel your body and not only will you look great naked but your skin will glow and your hair and nails will be healthier and shinier (just to name a few of the added benefits).

[Okay, so let me say something about cheats!  I allow myself a cheat once a week.  Not a whole day of cheats, but a cheat meal.  This doesn’t mean I’m going hog wild and eating every yummy, sinful thing I’ve craved or coveted that week… I just allow myself to eat a steak or pancakes or nachos or a scoop of ice cream with caramel sauce one day a week, so I don’t feel like I’m depriving myself of one of life’s smallest luxuries.  That’s all.]

Drink plenty of water!  (And watch your sodium intake – salt will make you retain water and cause bloat, which isn’t pretty).  To calculate how much you need, start by taking your weight, cut that in half and that is the number of ounces of water you should drink daily.  (Example:  I weigh 120 lbs., 120 divided by .5 is 60.  So I would need to drink 60 ounces of water a day).   Add 8 – 12 ounces for every half hour of strenuous exercise you do.  Sometimes when you think you are hungry, it is actually your body telling you to drink more water.  Water helps to flush your system of toxins and impurities and helps to regulate your body temperature (along with other benefits).  Don’t get dehydrated.  You want your skin to glow!

So that’s it (or at least that’s how I do it)!  Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you cannot look great naked when you are in your forties.  I think I look pretty damn good!  And you can too.  But you do have to work for it!
